I just wanted to take a moment to vent a bit. I did not want this blog to be a place to vent, but this information may be helpful to you if you decide to visit London.
If you have been reading my blog you know that I had a little stomach thing due to anxiety. This caused me to not have an appetite basically, my stomach shrunk, and now I trying to make my stomach big again.
Anywho. I finally got really hungry to the point I could eat a chicken sandwich, fries, and chocolate fudge cake...with a Pepsi. Ok. Not the healthiest thing, but dangit I am hungry!
So I ordered from a new place that put a flyer through our mail slot the other day. I ordered the aforementioned items. I received them an hour later. The time is reasonable. They have to cook the food and then drive to get it to me. 1 hour is perfectly acceptable. I unload my goodies and the garlic bread I ordered wasn't there. (yes I ordered garlic bread, too...don't ask why...I just wanted it) AND the chicken sandwich...the chicken was still PINK and basically raw in the middle. Quite annoying when you haven't really eaten much in a week and just want to dig in.
I called the place
"Hi, I just ordered..blah blah blah"
"What?"
"Your chicken is raw."
"What?"
"You didn't cook your chicken properly."
"Ma'am the chicken is put in the machine for 6 minutes. It's done. Next time ask for it to be well done."
"WHAT?! I understand what you're saying, but pink chicken is not edible chicken. It is raw. It does not need to be WELL done. It needs to be done period."
"Ma'am I will give you a free chicken sandwich, chips (fries), and your garlic bread free of charge next time you order. We only have one driver tonight."
"Thank you."
"What's your name?"
"Rachel."
"What?"
"Rachel."
"What?"
"R-A-C-H-E-L."
"Oh. Rye-chil. R-I-C-H-I-L."
"yeah. thanks. bye."
OK. After all that I have had to deal with so far - bank account, our flat problems, etc. - and now this. grr....I get to go to Germany tomorrow!!! I am so excited! Good food :) And people who can do their job efficiently. Not that England does not have efficient people, but geez la-weez. I have been just a little unlucky I guess.
I miss you all so much and hope I get to see you at Christmas! Less than 7 weeks!!!!
In the words of my colorful Auntie Fay, "Praise you Father!" :)

Should be fun!
Tomorrow I leave for Germany!!! We have to be at the airport at 6:30 am :) yay. But hey. I am going to Germany! We fly back to London Saturday night. We are seeing Koln, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and some other places. We will probably be sick of looking at art by the end, but that's the joy of grad school I suppose. Cram in more information than your brain can handle. I am excited about taking photos. We were told that Germany celebrates the fall season and Halloween more so than England. I am looking forward to that. I haven't had a true fall season since moving from Tennessee 4 1/2 years ago. :) I am so excited!!! I love taking photos.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week! Take care :)

ok
I went to the walk-in clinic yesterday about my stomach problem, and they told me it was anxiety. Anxiety about moving to another country, not being near my family, about school, etc. It's anxiety. Even though it was kind of aggravating to hear that it was something that I could control and I hadn't, it was good to know that it was anything super serious. Evidently when you become anxious your body produces a lot of adrenaline. Most people have anxiety at varying degrees, and deal with it in different ways, too. The doctor told me that if I exercise for 30 minutes a day, the adrenaline will come up through that and I won't feel super-anxious and sick. The adrenaline has been coming out of my body through making me sick. It didn't have anywhere else to go. Good to know, and if YOU didn't know about anxiety, now you do! That is your lesson for today :)
Needless to say I am doing much better just knowing what the problem is. I can fix it.
After the clinic, I got home and realized that I left my keys in the house, and Kendall had left to go to Oxford Street and the V&A. So I met her at the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum) and we looked around. It is huge! It's basically a history museum of objects. They do not have very many paintings. It was like stepping back into my Art History I and II text books. Pretty amazing. AND it just so happened that last night they had an event going on with their exhibit "Twilight". The exhibit was of photographs taken at dusk in various parts of the world by about 6 or 7 different artists. It was very interesting. After taking a photography course at Flagler last year, I was trying to figure out how they had such nice, clean exposures with hardly any light. It was as if you were standing in the dusk, too, when you looked at the photographs. The installation was creative. Each artist had their own small room, and the lights through the whole space were dimmed. It's a little difficult to explain. You should look it up on the V&A website.
Their partner for the event was Apple :) It was awesome! They had all their new huge screens out with the G5s. I was in heaven. I love my Mac! They had some computers set up printing out free photos from free "photo shoots". Kendall, Natalie, Megan, and I had our pictures taken against a Paris background. They had props, too! We had on black and white striped shirts, berets, and they had bread sticks! haha It was so funny! When I figure out how to get pictures on here, I will put it up :)
They also had a DJ there that would use songs off your iPod for the party. I forgot mine :(
Well, Tuesday we leave for Germany. It's going to be one crazy week! We are going to be so busy, but it is going to be fun! I will be taking lots of pictures, and when I figure out how to get pictures on here, I will put those up as well.
Take care all!
Thanks for reading :)

Time for an update!
Let's see....
We had a reading week last week where I did a day of research at the British Library. That was so fun! I felt so academic sitting in there with other academics and such. A true research library, they do not allow you to browse books. All the books are in storage and must be brought up to you once you request them through the card catalogue. Depending on where your book is (onsite, offsite, really far offsite) it can take anywhere from 1 hour to 48 hours to receive the book you have requested.
I also went to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens with my friend Amy. It was so nice outside! The weather had started out rainy that morning, and I was worried that we would have to cancel our plans. But the weather became blindingly sunny, and I actually had to take off my scarf and coat I was so hot. It was beautiful! Definitely a God send. I needed it. We had great conversation, coffee, and lunch. We ate lunch on a bench looking at the pond (I don't know the name of it or if it was even a pond. It was water, though :) While I was finishing up my salad that I bought at a cafe in the park, a woman with two kids and two dogs walked past us. One of the dogs noticed I had food. He almost tried to eat my salad but quickly noticed I had a cookie sitting on the bench next to me and went for that instead. THE WHOLE COOKIE!!! He just stuffed it in his mouth, chewed for two seconds and it was gone! It was so funny! The woman acted like she was embarrased and hesitantly offered to buy me another cookie, but I could tell she didn't really want to. For some reason I had the feeling it has happened before. Maybe that's how she feeds her dogs; walks them around parks without leashes and half-heartedly apologizes when they eat people's food. :) It was funny though, and it kept me from eating something fattening.
The rest of the week I worked on my paper and talked with our estate agent non-stop about our shower not working. First the shower: it has not worked properly since we moved in. They have had people come out and inspect it. Even our estate agent agreed it wasn't working the way it should. Still nothing was done about for some reason. Last week I made a resolution to get it taken care of once and for all. I called our estate agent almost every 2 hours making sure he was calling people ( like a plumber). Finally on Thursday at 5pm a plumber comes out. He identifies the problem, explains it to me, says he will call our estate agent who will then need to contact the owners of our flat to decide a course of action. Is it taken of, yet? Of course not :) I will keep everyone updated. I called the estate agent today. He wasn't in. I tried to leave a voicemail, "Hi, Joe Bob*. This is Rach-" "Thank you for calling. Goodbye!" WHAT?!?! The machine cut me off. So I e-mailed him. This was at 12:45pm. Their office closes at 5pm. Did I hear back from him? Haha What a silly question. Just a note: Almost everything here takes 4 times as long to get done then it does in the states. This situation is not my only experience with lack of timely service. I will not bore you with EVERY story, but trust me. Things take forever here. I love it here, but yeah...seriously.
The Paper:
So proud of myself. I actually did a bunch of research before I wrote my paper. I never do that. I haven't had many papers to write due to being an art major but anywho. If you know me well, which most of you do, I wait til the last minute to do anything. It's something about the time crunch that enables me to just punch stuff out...most of the time. By Friday I felt I had done all my research, I made an outline and was ready to write my paper Saturday morning. I was up until 4 am Sunday morning agonizing over a 2,000 to 3,000 word paper. It's really not that long if you think about it. I just wanted it "done" before I went to bed so I could proof-read the crap out of it the next day. That's why I stayed up that late. Plus I could sleep in because it was Sunday. Well my body decided to wake up at 7:45 am and be sick, making it impossible for me to work on my paper, and thus making me freak out. I had to get that paper done!!! I called my grandparents, crying hysterically just wanting to go home right then and there. I am not a quitter, and I was ready to quit. I was like, "Is it really worth getting this upset over?" My grandparents calmed me down, and told me they were buying my plane ticket home for Christmas! I am officially going to be home for Christmas!!! I am so excited!
So back to the paper: I finshed it at 1am. It was the worst thing I have ever written in my life, and I do not care what other people say. When you no it is crap, you know. Anywho. I couldn't go to school. My stomach was still upset. Kendall turned my paper in for me, and took notes for me at the lecture.
Yesterday I went to the gallery walk for school. I was okay. We went to 7 or 8 different galleries. It was fun, and the weather was beautiful. However, my appetite was not back to normal. Nor was my stomach really. It still isn't. I couldn't go to school today, but I am feeling emotionally better :) If that makes since. I was really ready to go home on Monday. I seriously thought I was going home. I called up travel agents, student flights, sta travel, etc. But again, my grandparents calmed me down, helped me focus, and I am now doing better. I have been in God's word and praying, and He is helping me tremendously. I will make it to Christmas. I will finish this degree and it will be amazing!
*A note on my stomach and stuff: I am going to the doctor on Friday. We'll see what happens.
This post sounds like I am not doing so great, but I am. Being in a foreign country away from your friends and family gets tough, and sometimes little breakdowns help you...in a way. I am doing really well. There is nothing to worry about, just in case you were :) If you are praying person, though, I could use your prayers. If there is anything you need, too, just let me know.
I will write more again soon, so I do not have posts this long ever again. Thanks for reading :)

oh good :)
Hola! I wanted to let everyone know I had a fabulous time at Frieze, listening to Koons, and at the art auction last weekend. Weekends like that are why I am here. Amazing. Seeing incredible art...some not so incredible, seeing famous people (Stella McCartney - saw her twice last weekend...crazy), enjoying London. It was so much fun!!!
Monday I started woking on my essay that is due the 23rd. We have a reading week this week. So I have been taking advantage of this time to use the British Library and the library at school. It has been amazing delving into great sources. I found a book of transcribed interviews that is fantastic. It is by Patricia Norvell. She was a grad student when she interviewed conceptual artists in the 60's. It is a first-hand account of what artists were thinking and doing in that time. It is absolutely incredible!!! She was a great interviewer, asking all the right questions to get them to really open up and be free with their thinking and process. She interviewed Robert Smithson (of land art fame), Robert Morris (who was also her professor at the time), Sol LeWitt, and others. She also interviewed Carl Andre, but he didn't want his interview to be included in the book unless he could edit it. Norvell believed that all the interviews should be left as is and therefore left out his from the book. She waited 30 years before transcribing these interviews. When she did put them in this book "the tapes were transcribed verbatim to preserve the original concept and process of this project as well as the historical veracity of the tapes themselves."
Ok. You have probably fallen asleep by this point, but please, if you have any interest in conceptual art or learning how artists think about their work READ THIS! The title of the book is Recording Conceptual Art. It is edited by Alexander Alberro and Patricia Norvell. It is basically the best read ever. Love it. ok. enough. I told you guys I would update...I didn't promise that it would be interesting. This is what I do though. I read, I get excited about what I learn, and then I spill it out to anyone who cares to listen :)
I hope all is well in the USA, Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras (all my family across the world :) If you are anywhere else reading this (ie UK or anywhere) I hope all is well there, too :)
I really need to get focused on my paper again. Typing this helped. It got me excited :) haha I love conceptual art!!!!!!!! It is so fascinating. ok. bye ! :)
Adios!

Can I Bring My Sleeping Bag?
Today we had a tour of Sotheby's Auction House. Incredible. They had Fabro, Fontana, Warhol, Marini, Hirst, Sol LeWitt, Manzoni, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Jeff Koons (his was a Bob Hope bobble head cast in stainless steel. It was awesome! And Kendall and I are going to hear Koons speak at a gallery tomorrow night)...there are many more, but I could on for days.
I loved the space at the auction house, too! I was expecting it to be really crazy, not hung properly, paintings leaning against walls, etc. It is not a gallery, it's an auction house, you know? But it is also Sotheby's :) They had everything hung nicely, labeled, sculptures on freshly painted pedestals, etc. They had multiple floors. All of them were carpeted so you couldn't hear all the women's loud heels or the men's manly dress shoes (I think most "businessmen" here spend more money on shoes and clothes than the women do. They always look so sharp.)
Being at Sotheby's this morning was one of the best experiences of my life. It reminded me of why I decided to come to Sotheby's Institute in the first place. I loved every second and didn't want to leave. I wanted to ask if I could bring my sleeping bag there and just camp out. They had a cafe and nice bathrooms...I could live there :) haha I really did feel "at home". It was so comfortable just walking around, chatting it up with the security guards - I already have friends there :) haha I am definitely applying for the Sotheby's internship this fall. The internship is for next summer, 40 hours of unpaid work a week. Can you imagine what I would learn, though? It would be completely worth it. I really hope I get it. It is extremely competitive. Start praying. Now :) If I don't get it, it will be a good experience with interviewing, too. But I would really like the internship :)
Tomorrow is the Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park. It occurs every year in October and showcases artists that are really popular at the moment or are about to become popular. Should be interesting!
Take care everyone!

networking...
I wanted to update earlier, but I forgot my password on here...makes it difficult to update. Anywho. I have now solved that problem :)
So, Kendall has a friend of the family who works for AIG, which is a huge insurance company. Therefore, her friend, we'll call him Joe, receives tickets for art events. He gave us tickets to see the Constable exhibit at Tate Britian in August. Now he has given us tickets to a formal after party at a very high-end auction house. Can you believe it???? I am so excited! Completely nervous but so excited!!!!!! I have to buy a really nice dress, probably some shoes and accessories. It's going to be amazing to meet people and see how the auction world is. I have done the gallery and museum circuit, so to speak. Now I get to experience the auction house! I don't get to view the actual auction, but I am still going to be at an amazing auction house :)
I have no idea what to expect. I feel nervous in "networking" situations for some reason. I have no problem talking to just about anyone, but the idea of 'this is a networking opportunity, Rachel' freaks me out a bit. Unfortunately, I usually say something really dumb or don't say anything at all. I obviously need to get over it. I am in London for crying out loud! I have so many opportunities here.
Speaking of other oppotunities, I am visiting Sotheby's Auction House tomorrow with my school. I am so excited!!!!! I have always watched Cash In The Attic on BBC America. Now I am going to actually be in the auction room!!!! YAY!!!!
I need to go to do research for my essay. I will write again soon! I am actually proud of myself that I have updated within a week :) That's good for me. I have 10 journals sitting at home in the US that have maybe 5 entries in each. haha Typing is so much faster. I love it :)

Hello to all!
I am sure I have told many people that I would start a blog to keep everyone up-to-date whilst I am in London. I have now been here for over a month! Hard to believe sometimes, but here is my first post :) Not a moment too soon.
I will be doing my best to update on a regular basis. This first post is just to let you know that I am well. Grad school is fantastic! I am enjoying all my lectures, our tutors/professors, and all the people in our program. We have an amazing group. There are 39 of us, and we all come from varied backgrounds. Kendall and I are the babies of the group :) I think there may be only 3 other people who graduated this year from undergrad. Everyone else has had real-world experience in various fields. There is a girl in the program who worked in the graphic design industry for a short time before coming to Sotheby's. I talked her ear off about paper, typography, etc. Anywho.
I know that I should write more. There is a lot more to tell, but I could write for days, so...If you want to know anything that I haven't mentioned, post a comment with a question and I will answer in the next post I make :)
I hope you know that if you are reading this, I think you are very special :) Please write me. Ask me questions.
until next time...
